IStructE Jan 2018 solution Question 2

Multi-Storey Steel and RC Frame with Hollowcore Slabs, Steel Trusses, and Secant Piling

Solution Overview

This solution presents two structural schemes for a multi-storey building. Scheme 1 utilizes RC columns, steel beams, and 450mm hollowcore slabs with structural topping, integrated with 250mm RC core walls. Scheme 2 features a steel truss roof system with 130mm metal deck slabs and braced bays.

Key engineering challenges addressed include vibration control for science park use, thermal stress management, and Class 2A fire resistance. The design covers diaphragm action, plan bracing, and lateral stability. Deliverables include detailed floor space breakdowns, plan layouts (Level 1, Level 2, and Roof), and structural sections (A-A and B-B) illustrating load paths, compression/tension distributions, and secant piled wall integration.
